Happy Spring All!

3-27-2004: We are honored and privileged to have our own "BlueDog" Ra win the Humane Society of the U.S. Best Friend Photo Contest. Over 4000 wonderful pets entered but Ra took the Grand Prize and gave us our honeymoon! That is no small gift and we are grateful to the organization and to our wonderful boy.

What a big, golden soul he has and it shined through the virtual world of pet lovers. Best of all, besides the Caribbean cruise we won, a pitbull from Oakland won and this will go a long way in educating America on this misunderstood, but loyal and sweet breed.

We wish you all a wonderful spring and send our abundance out to all of you and your relations threefold. Much love. We will toast the BlueDog community from our honeymoon cruise! Also, at the bottom of this page is a link that feeds abused animals. It's free and you can hit it once a day.

Also for more pix of our boy, the rest of the temple beasts as well as our furred, feathered and scaled friends, visit our gallery page. Please feel free to send pix of your own animal friends and we'll post them there. Blessed be all our relations.

Peace. Elisabeth and Mike.

Tyson - The Skateboarding Bulldog

04-22-2004: Seems that SuperDogs are everywhere! You absolutely must check out Tyson - and his skateboarding talents. He's giving Tony Hawk a run for his money! The following is from his website skateboardingbulldog.com :

Tyson has been around skateboards his entire life. As a puppy, he watched his human friends and family ride their boards, and enjoyed being pushed on a skateboard on the carpet. When he was out on walks, he would go nuts anytime a skateboarder would pass by him. We originally misinterpreted this excitement for fear/hatred, as he would jump and lunge at people on their boards (now, of course, we know that he was simply trying to catch a ride himself). After about six months of this behavior, when he was about a year old, we let him play with a skateboard in the backyard -- and, before we knew it, he was riding it. Not long after, we bought him his own board, and he's been pursuing his hobby ever since (and, yes, it truly is his hobby -- no coaxing from his humans is required!). It would not be an exaggeration to say that Tyson truly "lives to skate."

PetFest America 2004 - Columbus, OH

04-19-2004: We're back from PetFest America - our two day trek to the mid-west where Ra got his fifteen minutes of fame and we got to take home the grand prize he won in the Humane Society of the United States Photo Contest (see below).

This event was truly a spectacle we wouldn't have missed. We shared the stage at Ohio State University Buckeye arena (where Prince played the night before) with Ronald McDonald and his really big shoes and really big check to local animal shelters. Ra was given kudos as his winning picture was projected to the families of Columbus while the Vice President of the HSUS sang his praises.

A little nervous beneath the spotlights and very amused, we seized the moment on behalf of our golden boy. Mic in hand, we pointed out that a pitbull from Oakland won and addressed the issues of the breed being abused, misunderstood and discriminated against. It was our chance to educate just a bit - and it was our time to show off our dog. Great fun.

The Iams SuperDogs performed just after we finished. While the show was a little silly, mostly put on for the kids, we fell in love with the dogs who ranged from Chilibean the hairless Chihuahua to Bernie the 120-pound mountain dog. They performed with the commitment of Olympians, catching frisbees, leaping amazing heights and mastering agility courses. The animals were outstanding and were certainly a credit to their owners and handlers. It's wonderful to see people working harmoniously with their dogs.

Speaking of harmonious work, we were overjoyed at all the great exhibition booths at the event. There were lots of great organizations doing wonderful work for all animals. One which stuck out was Team Greyhound, who rescues these beautiful dogs when they're done at the racetrack. They estimate as many as 15,000 racing Greyhounds are put down yearly when they are no longer profitable. These two dogs were on-hand with two more of their friends, and you could feel the love pouring out of them. It was like a herd of Greyhounds. They were majestic, relaxed and happy creatures, who deserve better than a career feeding the greed of racetracks. All doubt about taking in one of these dogs was gone the moment one of them came in for a "heart hug". Truly wonderful dogs. Take one look at that beak, and you'll want to put a hot dog in it right away!

While Ohio was a bit far to bring one of these dogs back, we will definitely be looking into a Greyhound from a local Greyhound rescue in the future. Check out some of these websites for great information on adopting these awesome dogs.

Why We Call Ourselves BlueDog & Our Love for the Dog

We called ourselves BlueDog because the Dog is a sacred, loyal animal who has chosen to work and live with humans, more so than nearly any other animal. We consider that no small sacrifice and no small gift. Historically, the Wolf was Teacher and Brother to ancient people because Wolf society was an example to man of how to live in a family-tribal structure.

Clues to Our Origin

Berkeley professor says 160,000-year-old remains found in Ethiopia lend weight to humans' roots in Africa. The skulls of two adults and a child may likely be near ancestors of a primeval but very human Adam and Eve who roamed the lush shoreline of the lake and nearby hills and savanna, slaying hippos and crocodiles for meat.

Mawu: Incredible Traveling Embodiment

So.....I'm on my way up to Sebastopol to study the work of Archeologist Marija Gimbutas with my teacher Joan. I've been turned on to the Neolithic art that was illuminated by Gimbutas' intense scholarship, which appears to depict the sacredness of the female body. Symbols on the artifacts include sublime swirls, meandering chevrons and pelvic triangles. The study of this art is part of my graduate work...

Madonna - American Girl

Madonna makes a point with her racy and provocative American Girl video.  Originally slated for release during the Iraqi war, this video never found its way to MTV. According to madonna.com, she stated the material in the video was inappropriate during "the times at hand."  This copy of the video - recorded from a foreign television station - was posted on several websites for weeks, before it was removed.

My Teacher Was a Trantula

Recently, I had the opportunity to rescue a tarantula. He came to me, incredibly pissed-off, in a peanut jar. A friend found him walking across the road in a hotter part of the state and decided to catch him. I happened to be there when he brought him home. There he was, large, hairy, and scared, propped up, pink fangs exposed, stuck in a jar too small to even put down all eight legs....

Is This Globular Cluster Our Ancestor?

You are looking at about a half million stars orbiting their own center. This phenomena of gravitationally bound concentrations of stars, is called a Globular Cluster. This one is M13 and is visible in the Hercules system. M13 is actually moving away from our point in space toward what the astronomers call the "Galactic Center" of the Universe...

Mt. Shasta - Experiencing Ascension

During last October's full moon, my friend Aphrodite dragged me by the hand to a healer's conference in Mt. Shasta. It's funny how we resist the very thing we need. And boy, did I whine! "I can't go because of money, of time, of the inconvenience...," and my now famous and laughable temper tantrum of the xenophobe, "If I get abducted by aliens, I'm never gonna talk to you again."

Winter Solstice '01 - A Timeless Message

What an exciting time to be alive. And an exhausting one! If you are like us, you've experienced some of the deepest disappointments of your life, as well as some of the most awe inspiring epiphanies. The old paradigm is dying and something new and wonderful is being born. We are witnessing this in our personal lives, as well as collectively.

Good Wife's Guide

Here's a hilarious and sobering relic of American culture. This article explains exactly what it takes to be a good wife. It's pretty scary to realize that this attitude was considered "normal" only about fifty years ago...

Metamorphosys

My people can't see that we're walking in circles like nomads in a foreign land
In boxes in bubbles like oxen we'll work so hard
Idealistic visions of a world removed from separation
In darkness, indifference, we'll all have our conflicts and our weakness
Look within at your own divination and you'll see that we're all one.

Like insects, shedding our skins
What kind of insect trap have we gotten ourselves in?
Metamorphosis given us wings!
What do we do with them why have they given us these things?
Adapting to infinity and the energy therein
Until the boundaries between us start to wear thin

Waiting, wanting something solid to stand on
I'm getting anxious, feeling restless.
I'm aching with laughter
Awaiting disaster.
